No attorney-client relationship

Contacting the firm through this website, including by submitting the contact form, does not create an attorney-client relationship. An engagement begins only when we have confirmed it in writing and any conflicts check is complete.

Information sent before engagement

Information you send before an engagement is confirmed may not be treated as privileged or confidential. Please do not send sensitive details about your matter until we have confirmed we can act for you.

Attorney advertising

This website may be considered attorney advertising in some jurisdictions. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

Jurisdictional limits

Bancroft Law Office practises through two offices. Our Chicago attorneys are admitted in the State of Illinois. Our London office is a firm of solicitors of England and Wales. We do not practise, and do not hold ourselves out as qualified to practise, the law of any jurisdiction in which the lawyer handling your matter is not admitted.

Where a matter touches a jurisdiction we are not admitted in, we work with local counsel there, and we will tell you when we are doing so and who they are.

This website is available to the general public and is not an offer to represent anyone in a jurisdiction where doing so would breach that jurisdiction's rules on advertising or on the practice of law. Descriptions of the law on this site are general; they may not be accurate for your jurisdiction and should not be relied on as though they were.

Some jurisdictions restrict how lawyers may describe their services and their results. Where the rules of your jurisdiction conflict with anything published here, those rules prevail.

Regulatory information

Chicago. Our Illinois attorneys are licensed by the Supreme Court of Illinois and are subject to the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct. Registration and discipline are administered by the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois, iardc.org.

London. Bancroft Law Office (London) is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, SRA number 000000. Our work is governed by the SRA Standards and Regulations, published at sra.org.uk, and we carry professional indemnity insurance meeting the minimum terms and conditions of the SRA Indemnity Insurance Rules. Details of our insurer and the territorial coverage of the policy are available on request.

Use of the word "partner". In relation to our London office, "partner" means a senior lawyer of the firm; it does not imply that the person is a partner in a partnership with any other person.

Complaints. If you are a client of our London office and we have not resolved your complaint to your satisfaction, you may refer it to the Legal Ombudsman, PO Box 6167, Slough SL1 0EH, legalombudsman.org.uk — normally within 6 months of our final response to you, and within one year of the act complained of or of when you should reasonably have known there was cause to complain. Conduct that breaches the SRA's rules can be reported to the SRA. Complaints about our Illinois attorneys go to the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission.

We are required to tell you that alternative dispute resolution bodies exist which are competent to deal with complaints about legal services, should both you and the firm wish to use such a scheme.
